I love going to the Red Bird and just hanging out, playing pool. The owners are awesome and the bartenders are always nice!

The door has a WARNING sign that smoking is permitted. There were a few smokers but my clothes did not smell of smoke after leaving -I think this is the only place in town to get dinner and a cocktail before the Elkhart Civic theatre performance, this appears to be a one man show with the bartender cooking , serving , and making the drinks. The bartender was friendly, The hamburger was delicious, the beer was cold, the ladies room was clean and we made it to the performance in plenty of time- I couldn't ask for more-I'll go back

On a long road trip, we had planned to stop in Bristol, Indiana and eat at the local Subway but because of road delays, the Subway was closed. So we saw that the Red Bird Tavern (Yelp calls it Red Bird Cafe so I'm not sure if it has two names) was open so we walked across.
The bartender was very personable and friendly and the chicken salad sandwich (toasted) was mmm-mmm tasty. The cook was also very friendly. The food was cheaper than a typical Subway - $4 for the freshly made sandwich, .75 cents for a bag of chips and a buck for a fountain soda.
Note: The bar allows smoking (in fact a sign on the door warns you of this) so one of my traveling companions waited outside but it was kind of cool to have that "throwback" feeling since every bar and restaurant where I live is now non-smoking. Bathroom was moderately clean - as good as a drinking establishment on a Friday night can be and the drinking patrons were well-behaved.
